The best Chili is at the Chili Cook Off in Portsmout NH

Fall is the best season in New England.  Foliage colors are changing, harvest festivals abound and the annual Chili Cook Off happens in Portsmouth, NH.  Located just a 20 minute walk from the Martin Hill Inn, the annual NH Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off at Strawbery Bank Museum is one of the big attractions for our bed and breakfast guests.

Each year, dozens of local restaurants and chefs compete for top billing as People's Choice, Critic's Choice or Best Booth for the year.  The chili comes in all forms - beef, pork, veggie, hot, spicy, BBQ, mellow or a little of each.  The booths can be simple or extravagant with wonderful fall themes of pumpkin, corn husks, and tokens of the coming All Hallows Eve!  All this wonderful chili to be tasted, debated and voted on can be found on the grounds of the Museum for an entry fee of just $15.00.  Gates open at 11:30 and the chili keeps coming until all the pots are empty.  Believe me, you won't want lunch after this.

Wait, there's more.  Your $15.00 also buys entry to the NH Fall Festival also on the grounds of the Strawbery Banke Museum.  See sheep dog demonstrations, livestock exhibits, weaving, spinning, hearth cooking, and tour the buildings that make up the museum while you are there.  Learn about heirloom seeds and see the traditional cooking and preserving of the harvest for winter.

When you are exhausted from all the activity, return to the Martin Hill Inn for a mug of hot cider and some homemade cookies to rest your feet.  Look over the menu binder and choose your next culinary adventure!
